“When we show up, act boldly, and practice the best ways to be wrong, we fail forward.” Stacey Abrams

Boldness can be defined as the willingness to take risks and confront fears, stepping outside of comfort zones and forging new paths despite the fear of failure. Ellen McCarthy, in Unapologetically Bold, captures this essence: "Boldness is about taking risks, stepping outside the comfort zone, and forging new paths despite the fear of failure."
While boldness involves taking calculated risks with a clear purpose and understanding of potential outcomes, recklessness ignores consequences and acts impulsively. Peter H. Diamandis and Steven Kotler in Bold: How to Go Big, Create Wealth and Impact the World, highlight this distinction: "The day before something is a breakthrough, it’s a crazy idea." This illustrates how what might seem reckless initially can, with insight, intention, and even hindsight, lead to groundbreaking achievements.
Human boldness is deeply connected to emotional, psychological, and ethical dimensions. Brené Brown, in Daring to Lead: How the Bold Change the World, emphasizes that "The most courageous among us embrace vulnerability not as a weakness, but as the ultimate act of bravery." Boldness requires a blend of emotional resilience, psychological strength, and ethical conviction, allowing individuals to navigate uncertainties and pursue meaningful goals.
“Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
AI and machines, despite their advancements, lack the intrinsic human qualities necessary for boldness. John O’Leary, in his book, In Awe, points out, "When you reawaken your sense of wonder, you’ll return to the path of possibility. Rather than clinging to your ego and the desire to have all the answers, you’ll be bold enough to ask the kinds of questions that lead to thinking more creatively, collaborating more effectively, innovating more frequently, and proving the impossible possible." This sense of wonder and creative questioning is uniquely human and essential to boldness.
Boldness drives progress and innovation by pushing boundaries and rejecting limits. As John O’Leary notes, "We make big moves and enact true change when we put our minds together and use our sense of wonder to push boundaries, reject limits, and go where no one has ever gone before." Bold individuals challenge the status quo, leading to significant advancements and breakthroughs.
Boldness plays a crucial role in personal growth and societal change. Michelle Obama, in The Light We Carry, asserts, "We have to be able to envision what’s possible, summoning it from the unknown—whatever does not yet exist, the sort of world we hope to live in—in order to even begin to actualize a plan to get there." T.D. Jakes, in Disruptive Thinking, adds, "The reality is that we all have invisible fences in our lives, quietly working to hold us back, to make us afraid, to curtail our attempts at boldness." Overcoming these barriers enables personal transformation and contributes to broader societal shifts.
“We are the hero of our own story.” Mary McCarthy
Boldness is a multifaceted human trait. It distinguishes itself from recklessness through purpose and insight. Boldness is unique to humans due to our ability to wonder, question, and innovate creatively. It can be a powerful driver of progress, innovation, personal growth, and societal change. By understanding and cultivating boldness, we can unlock new possibilities and create a better future.

In today's increasingly digital world, it's easy to lose sight of what makes us human. The constant bombardment of screens and social media can distract us from cultivating essential qualities like kindness, empathy, and resilience.
My book, Nurturing Hopeful Resilience, guides parents and caregivers through the challenges of raising children in a technology-driven age. It explores the importance of instilling strong values in children from a young age to help them develop into compassionate, responsible, and fulfilled individuals.
Through a series of practical exercises and insightful reflections, this book delves into fourteen core values: curiosity, awareness, kindness, learning, self-awareness, fairness, playfulness, compassion, service, belonging, trustworthiness, authenticity, community, and responsibility. Understanding and nurturing these values can empower our children to thrive in a complex and ever-changing world.
This book offers a roadmap for raising children who are academically successful, emotionally intelligent, socially adept, and morally grounded. It encourages readers to prioritize human connection, empathy, and compassion over material possessions and fleeting digital distractions. By embracing the power of values, we can create a brighter future for ourselves and generations to come.
