“All we have to decide is what to do with the time given to us.” J.R.R. Tolkien

Maybe you've never climbed a mountain or kayaked down a raging river. Perhaps the furthest you've ventured from your comfort zone is ordering a dish with an unfamiliar name at a local restaurant. Adventure isn't reserved for the globetrotters and adrenaline junkies. The beauty of adventure lies in its accessibility; it's a journey that begins with a single step, regardless of your starting point.
You can cultivate a life of adventure by incorporating small, yet impactful, changes into your daily routine. Think of it like building a muscle. You wouldn't attempt to lift a heavy weight on day one; you'd start with something manageable and gradually increase the challenge. The same principle applies to adventure.
“Sometimes the thing that gets you to do the thing you really want to do but have been avoiding for no apparent reason is something that kicks you in the ass, breaks your heart, or otherwise confounds what you thought you needed to get moving.” Amrita Rose

Let's begin with your own backyard, or more precisely, your neighborhood. Have you explored every street, park, or hidden alleyway? Pick a day to wander a different direction, with no destination in mind. You might stumble upon a charming bookstore you never noticed before, a cozy cafe with the most delectable pastries, or a hidden park teeming with life. Remember, adventure isn't always about grand gestures; sometimes, the most profound discoveries lie right under our noses. I always follow the same route when I take a walk. It helps me to take a mindful meditation. I don’t need to think about where I am going. I started walking in the opposite direction, and even though it is the same path, I saw things in a different way. This helped me to also think of things in a different way. It helped me to find a creative solution to a problem I had been pondering for weeks. I also had a few new ideas as I walked. Just this one change got me thinking of trying different places, to see if I can shake things up even more. I am looking into other walking paths in my town. My walks don’t always need to be a mindful meditation. Sometimes, I need an adventure in the middle of the week!
“Taking a wrong turn allows you to see landscapes you wouldn’t otherwise have seen.” Rick Rubin

Another way to embrace adventure is to step outside your culinary comfort zone. Instead of resorting to the same old takeout routine, explore a new cuisine. Head to a farmers' market and pick up unfamiliar ingredients, then challenge yourself to create a dish you've never tried before. The process of exploring new flavors and textures can be an adventure, not to mention the satisfaction of a delicious, home-cooked meal you can truly call your own.
How often do you find yourself declining invitations or opportunities simply because they seem out of the ordinary? Perhaps a friend suggests a spontaneous hike or a local art exhibit you know nothing about. This is your chance to break the pattern and say "yes." Even if the experience turns out to be less than thrilling, you'll gain a new perspective and potentially discover a hidden passion you never knew you had.
“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.” Oscar Wilde

Let's be honest, sometimes the biggest obstacle to adventure is fear. Maybe the thought of navigating a new city alone fills you with anxiety, or the idea of trying a physically demanding activity sends shivers down your spine. Fear is a natural human response to the unknown, but it shouldn't hold you back. As Simon Scott beautifully states in Scare Your Soul, "Pushing comfort zones has become my muse, and living my life like an adventure has become my guidebook." The key is to acknowledge your fear, but then choose to move forward anyway.
Here's a powerful strategy from Elissa Epel's book The Stress Prescription: simply tell yourself that the experience you're dreading is exciting, rather than threatening. This shift in perspective can reframe your fear as a positive form of anticipation, propelling you towards the adventure instead of paralyzing you.
Remember, the most transformative adventures often begin with a single, courageous step outside your comfort zone. Tomorrow, we will delve into the world of bigger adventures, from exploring new cultures to embarking on solo journeys. But before we jet off to faraway lands, let's solidify the foundation – the understanding that adventure is a choice, a way of approaching life with curiosity and an open mind. So, take a deep breath, embrace the small opportunities that surround you, and get ready to craft your own unique adventure story.

In today's increasingly digital world, it's easy to lose sight of what makes us human. The constant bombardment of screens and social media can distract us from cultivating essential qualities like kindness, empathy, and resilience.
My book, Nurturing Hopeful Resilience, guides parents and caregivers through the challenges of raising children in a technology-driven age. It explores the importance of instilling strong values in children from a young age to help them develop into compassionate, responsible, and fulfilled individuals.
Through a series of practical exercises and insightful reflections, this book delves into fourteen core values: curiosity, awareness, kindness, learning, self-awareness, fairness, playfulness, compassion, service, belonging, trustworthiness, authenticity, community, and responsibility. Understanding and nurturing these values can empower our children to thrive in a complex and ever-changing world.
This book offers a roadmap for raising children who are academically successful, emotionally intelligent, socially adept, and morally grounded. It encourages readers to prioritize human connection, empathy, and compassion over material possessions and fleeting digital distractions. By embracing the power of values, we can create a brighter future for ourselves and generations to come.
