“It’s in our biology to trust what we see with our eyes. This makes living in a carefully edited, overproduced, and Photoshopped world very dangerous.” Brené Brown

Honesty starts from within. It's about living authentically, being true to who you are, and aligning your thoughts, words, and actions. This journey of self-discovery builds a strong foundation for honesty in all areas of your life.
“I had to take stock of what was working in my life and what wasn’t. Perhaps for the first time, I had to be ruthlessly honest, both inwardly and outwardly.” Sarah Ban Breathnach

Building this inner compass takes work, but the rewards are tremendous. Here are some ways to cultivate honesty with yourself:
1. Self-Reflection:
Take time each day to reflect on your thoughts, feelings, and actions. Ask yourself questions like: "What am I truly feeling right now?" or "Why did I react that way?" Journaling is a great way to capture these reflections and identify patterns.
2. Owning Your Mistakes:
We all make mistakes. The key is to acknowledge them – “When you can’t be honest with yourself, you’re the only one who loses," as Dr. Rick Hanson reminds us in his book Resilient. Owning your mistakes builds trust in yourself and allows you to learn and grow.
3. Recognizing Your Biases:
We all have unconscious biases that influence our thoughts and actions. "It can be humbling to realize how often we have only a partial picture of what’s going on," says Dr. Hanson. Take time to explore these biases. Read books and articles on the topic and be open to feedback from others.
4. Embracing Your Whole Self:
We often have a version of ourselves we present to the world, carefully curated to avoid rejection. But true honesty requires embracing all aspects of who you are, even the "not-so-perfect" parts. "When you’re genuine, the ‘real you’ is the one people see. You’re authentic,” writes Barbara Lewis in What Do You Stand For?. This authenticity fosters deeper connections with yourself and others.
5. Honesty About Your Limits:
Knowing and accepting your limitations is crucial for honesty. Saying "no" when you're overwhelmed or stretched too thin isn't weakness, it's self-respect. "The power of ‘no’ is hard-won," says Mary Pipher in Women Rowing North. Learning to set boundaries with yourself and others allows you to be your most honest and productive self.
“Truth, like surgery, may hurt, but it cures.” Han Suyin

Developing honesty with yourself is an ongoing process. There will be bumps along the way, but every honest step you take strengthens your inner compass and paves the way for a more fulfilling and authentic life.
"There is only one way to avoid criticism: do nothing, say nothing, and be nothing.” Aristotle

Art Activity: Create a collage using magazine clippings or found objects that represent your "true self" and the things you might be hiding.
In today's increasingly digital world, it's easy to lose sight of what makes us human. The constant bombardment of screens and social media can distract us from cultivating essential qualities like kindness, empathy, and resilience.
My book, Nurturing Hopeful Resilience, guides parents and caregivers through the challenges of raising children in a technology-driven age. It explores the importance of instilling strong values in children from a young age to help them develop into compassionate, responsible, and fulfilled individuals.
Through a series of practical exercises and insightful reflections, this book delves into fourteen core values: curiosity, awareness, kindness, learning, self-awareness, fairness, playfulness, compassion, service, belonging, trustworthiness, authenticity, community, and responsibility. Understanding and nurturing these values can empower our children to thrive in a complex and ever-changing world.
This book offers a roadmap for raising children who are academically successful, emotionally intelligent, socially adept, and morally grounded. It encourages readers to prioritize human connection, empathy, and compassion over material possessions and fleeting digital distractions. By embracing the power of values, we can create a brighter future for ourselves and generations to come.
