“The crucial task of age is balance, a veritable tightrope of balance; keeping just well enough, just brave enough, just gay and interested enough to remain a sentient human being.” Florida Scott-Maxwell

Balance. It's a word we hear constantly – work-life balance, emotional balance, even a "balanced breakfast." But what exactly does it mean? Is it some ideal state of perfect equilibrium, where everything in our lives neatly counterbalances everything else? The truth, as I've come to learn, is far more nuanced.
Imagine a tightrope walker, gracefully traversing a high wire. Their movements are a constant dance of adjustment. A slight lean to the right, and they course-correct. One step too far to the left, and they topple. Balance, in this sense, isn't about a static position; it's about a continuous process of making small adjustments to stay centered.
Our lives are a lot like that tightrope. We juggle work deadlines with caring for loved ones, our need for personal growth with the demands of social connection. Sometimes, work spills over into our evenings, leaving us drained. Other times, neglecting social connections can lead to feelings of isolation.
“As we look deeply within, we understand our perfect balance. There is no fear of the cycle of birth, life, and death. For when you stand in the present moment, you are timeless.” Rodney Yee

This week will be an exploration of balance in all its messy glory. We'll delve into the different aspects of our lives – career, relationships, health, and more – and see how achieving a sense of balance within each can contribute to a more fulfilling existence.
But here's the key: balance doesn't mean everything gets equal attention all the time.
As Irene Smit and Astrid van der Hulst remind us, "The balance we are looking for has nothing to do with being balanced but with the wish to lead a meaningful life."
Take a doctor, for instance. During a medical crisis, maintaining a perfect 50/50 split between work and personal life might be impossible. The doctor might have to put in long hours to save a life, knowing that a sense of balance will return when the crisis is over.
“Individual notes must be learned and played and practiced before we achieve harmony. And above all, we must learn how to pause, time to dream, time to think, time to contemplate what’s working and what’s not, so that we can make changes for the better.” Sarah Ban Breathnach

The concept of balance extends beyond the individual to society as a whole. A balanced society is one where there's a healthy interplay between economic success, environmental protection, and social welfare. When one element becomes too dominant, the system becomes unstable.
This week, we'll explore different philosophies and practices that can help us navigate the tightrope of life. We'll confront the challenges of achieving balance in a world that constantly pulls us in different directions. And ultimately, we'll discover that a meaningful life isn't about achieving a perfect equilibrium, but about finding the rhythm that allows us to move with grace and purpose.
So, are you ready to take a step onto the tightrope? Let's begin.
Journal Prompts:
Reflect on a time when you felt balanced in your life. What factors contributed to that sense of equilibrium? How can you replicate those conditions in your current circumstances?
What areas of your life feel out of balance right now? Explore the reasons behind these imbalances and brainstorm small adjustments you can make to regain equilibrium.
Consider the concept of "messy glory" in finding balance. How do you feel about embracing imperfection in your pursuit of balance? How can you redefine what balance means to you?
Write about a recent experience where you had to prioritize one aspect of your life over another. How did you navigate this decision, and what were the outcomes?
Imagine your ideal balanced day. Describe it in detail, from morning routines to evening wind-down activities. What steps can you take to bring this vision closer to reality?
In today's increasingly digital world, it's easy to lose sight of what makes us human. The constant bombardment of screens and social media can distract us from cultivating essential qualities like kindness, empathy, and resilience.
My book, Nurturing Hopeful Resilience, guides parents and caregivers through the challenges of raising children in a technology-driven age. It explores the importance of instilling strong values in children from a young age to help them develop into compassionate, responsible, and fulfilled individuals.
Through a series of practical exercises and insightful reflections, this book delves into fourteen core values: curiosity, awareness, kindness, learning, self-awareness, fairness, playfulness, compassion, service, belonging, trustworthiness, authenticity, community, and responsibility. Understanding and nurturing these values can empower our children to thrive in a complex and ever-changing world.
This book offers a roadmap for raising children who are academically successful, emotionally intelligent, socially adept, and morally grounded. It encourages readers to prioritize human connection, empathy, and compassion over material possessions and fleeting digital distractions. By embracing the power of values, we can create a brighter future for ourselves and generations to come.
