“Loving can cost a lot, but not loving always costs more.” Merle Shain

Healthy relationships begin with honesty. Honesty allows us to connect authentically, build trust, and weather life's inevitable storms together.
Honest communication is a two-way street. It involves expressing your thoughts and feelings openly and actively listening to the other person. This doesn't mean blurting out everything that comes to mind, but rather communicating with kindness and respect.
Honesty involves setting healthy boundaries. This means being clear about your needs and expectations, and “having a legitimate need to find out what you can count on from others," as Dr. Rick Hanson writes in Resilient. Don't be afraid to say "no" or to have difficult conversations when necessary.
“Half the truth is often a great lie.” Benjamin Franklin

Conflict is a normal part of any relationship. The key is to address it head-on and honestly. "At times, it will feel right to choose harmony instead of truth," Dr. Hanson warns, but remember "relationships rest on a foundation of trust, respect, and commitment," built through honest communication.
Honesty with your children builds trust and fosters a strong foundation for their growth. "In our attempts to protect our children, we inadvertently signal that the unknown is scary," writes John O’Leary. Being honest and age-appropriate allows them to develop healthy coping mechanisms and strong self-esteem. From the time my son was very young, I always taught him that I would not punish him if he told the truth. Over the years, this trust has been key to our relationship and in turn, how he relates to others.
“True forgiveness is when you can say, thank you for that experience.” Oprah Winfrey

True friendships are built on honesty and trust. Being honest with your friends allows them to support you through thick and thin. "Listen to your friends,” encourages Cyndie Spiegel in Microjoys. They often have valuable insights to offer, but this can only happen in an environment of open communication.
Honesty is essential for a healthy, fulfilling romantic relationship. "When you’re sincere, you don’t flatter people to try to make them like you,” writes Barbara Lewis. Be open and honest about your feelings, needs, and expectations. This fosters intimacy and allows the relationship to grow stronger.
Honesty in relationships isn't always easy. There will be times when the truth is difficult to say or hear. But remember, the rewards of genuine connection, trust, and intimacy far outweigh the discomfort of temporary honesty.
“Dishonest people don’t believe that honest people exist.” Stephanie Meyer

Game: Play a "Two Truths and a Lie" game. Each person shares three statements, two truths and a lie about themselves. The others guess which statement is the lie, prompting honest revelations and laughter.
In today's increasingly digital world, it's easy to lose sight of what makes us human. The constant bombardment of screens and social media can distract us from cultivating essential qualities like kindness, empathy, and resilience.
My book, Nurturing Hopeful Resilience, guides parents and caregivers through the challenges of raising children in a technology-driven age. It explores the importance of instilling strong values in children from a young age to help them develop into compassionate, responsible, and fulfilled individuals.
Through a series of practical exercises and insightful reflections, this book delves into fourteen core values: curiosity, awareness, kindness, learning, self-awareness, fairness, playfulness, compassion, service, belonging, trustworthiness, authenticity, community, and responsibility. Understanding and nurturing these values can empower our children to thrive in a complex and ever-changing world.
This book offers a roadmap for raising children who are academically successful, emotionally intelligent, socially adept, and morally grounded. It encourages readers to prioritize human connection, empathy, and compassion over material possessions and fleeting digital distractions. By embracing the power of values, we can create a brighter future for ourselves and generations to come.
