“I’m big because I’m connected to the universe and the universe is connected to me.” Neil DeGrasse Tyson

Creating a community is a powerful endeavor that requires understanding, commitment, and a genuine desire to connect with others. It's about building a space where people feel valued, understood, and have a sense of belonging. Throughout this week, we've explored the importance of belonging, the impact of loneliness, and the stages of forming connections from the first interaction to intimate relationships. Now, let's delve into the process of creating a community where individuals can thrive and grow together.
Radha Agrawal beautifully defines community as "a group of 3 or more people with whom you share similar values and interests and where you experience a sense of belonging." Building such a community requires a deep understanding of ourselves, our values, interests, and abilities. Agrawal emphasizes the importance of clarity in what we truly want and care about, as it guides us in creating our dream community.
Communities are not just built overnight; they evolve person by person, through thoughtful design, and authentic connection. Agrawal's motto, "What you put in is what you get out," encapsulates the essence of community building. It's about sharing our gifts and abilities with the greater whole, contributing to the community's growth, and nurturing it with care and intention.
Building a thriving community requires attention to various elements that foster connection, belonging, and growth. Let's explore these building blocks:
Core Values, Constraints, and Community: Establish the philosophical foundation for your community by defining core values, constraints, and the core community members. These elements shape the community's direction and help people decide if they want to join.
Rituals and Traditions: Rituals upon entry and exit of gatherings invite a deeper community experience. Defining rituals and traditions for your community develops loyalty and a sense of belonging, connecting members meaningfully.
Aesthetics: The visual and sensory aspects of a community space play a crucial role in attracting the right members and creating an inviting atmosphere.
Language and Communication: Learn the difference between words and language. Find your authentic voice, ask better questions, and encourage open communication to foster deeper connections.
Consistency and Accountability: Regular meetups, consistent participation, and accountability are vital for community building. Make a commitment to show up and engage with your community consistently.
Inclusivity and Diversity: Embrace diversity and create an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and understood.
Community building is an ongoing process that requires nurturing and sustained effort. Agrawal's tips for nurturing friendships and communities provide valuable insights:
Be present and listen.
Take initiative and be accountable.
Share meals together.
Give thoughtful gifts.
Inspire fun, play, and adventure.
Design spaces with intention and care.
Engage in advanced communication.
Show affection through touch.
Embrace creativity with costumes and activities.
Stay active and engaged together.
Communities play a vital role in addressing societal challenges and fostering cooperation. As Vivek H. Murthy states, "Communities around the world are dealing with pressing problems like climate change, terrorism, poverty, and racial and economic inequities. Addressing these issues requires dialogue and cooperation." Strong human connections can help us work through these challenges together, emphasizing the importance of community in creating a connected and supportive world.
Belonging is a fundamental human need that shapes our interactions, relationships, and overall well-being. From understanding the definition and benefits of belonging to exploring ways to overcome loneliness and build connections, we've journeyed through the intricate aspects of human connection.
Finding your tribe, connecting with like-minded individuals, and creating a supportive community are essential steps in fostering a sense of belonging. As Agrawal aptly puts it, "Imagine what the world would look like if every single human felt belonging. We would show up for each other, embody inclusion, and focus on the importance of belonging as a critical aspect of our existence."
Creating a community is a powerful way to contribute to a more connected and compassionate world. It's about building relationships, sharing our gifts, and making a positive impact on the lives of others. As we cultivate these connections and nurture our communities, we pave the way for a brighter and more inclusive future.
I was inspired by John O'Leary, in his book In Awe, "My friend, you belong here. You are worthy. You are enough. And we celebrate you. Your assignment is to remind those you encounter of that same truth in their lives. We belong. We are each an essential piece of the puzzle. Let's remember how beautiful it is to do life together. No, we don't all look the same. We don't all vote the same way. We don't all worship in the same church or mosque or synagogue. We don't even always get along. But we belong. Let's stop putting up walls and building fences. Instead, let's take them down. Let's put aside our masks. Let's open up our lives, not only by how we accept others, but by embracing who we are."
I used this quote to create the following activity!
Actions to Embrace Belonging -
Genuine Compliments: Make it a habit to give genuine compliments to people you interact with daily. It could be about their achievements, kindness, or any unique qualities you admire about them. This simple act can make someone feel seen and appreciated.
Inclusive Gatherings: Organize events or gatherings where people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs can come together to share their stories, traditions, and experiences. This promotes understanding, acceptance, and a sense of belonging.
Listen Actively: Practice active listening when someone shares their thoughts, feelings, or experiences. Show empathy and validate their feelings by acknowledging their emotions and providing a supportive space for them to express themselves.
Celebrate Diversity: Host events or activities that celebrate diversity, such as cultural festivals, art exhibitions, or community dinners. Encourage people to share their cultural heritage, traditions, and stories, fostering a sense of unity and appreciation for differences.
Volunteer Together: Engage in community service or volunteer activities as a group. Working together for a common cause can strengthen bonds, create shared experiences, and highlight the importance of collaboration and community support.
Open Conversations: Create safe spaces for open and honest conversations about identity, belonging, and acceptance. Encourage people to share their perspectives, challenges, and aspirations, promoting mutual understanding and empathy.
Challenge Stereotypes: Speak up against stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination. Educate others about the harmful effects of these biases and encourage them to embrace diversity and inclusivity.
Support Inclusive Policies: Advocate for inclusive policies and practices in your workplace, school, or community organizations. Encourage leadership to prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion in decision-making processes and organizational culture.
Share Personal Stories: Share your own experiences, challenges, and growth journey with others. By opening up about your vulnerabilities and successes, you create an environment that encourages authenticity, connection, and mutual support.
Offer Support: Reach out to individuals who may feel isolated or excluded, offering them support, encouragement, and friendship. Show them that they are valued, appreciated, and an essential part of the community.
In today's increasingly digital world, it's easy to lose sight of what makes us human. The constant bombardment of screens and social media can distract us from cultivating essential qualities like kindness, empathy, and resilience.
My book, Nurturing Hopeful Resilience, guides parents and caregivers through the challenges of raising children in a technology-driven age. It explores the importance of instilling strong values in children from a young age to help them develop into compassionate, responsible, and fulfilled individuals.
Through a series of practical exercises and insightful reflections, this book delves into fourteen core values: curiosity, awareness, kindness, learning, self-awareness, fairness, playfulness, compassion, service, belonging, trustworthiness, authenticity, community, and responsibility. Understanding and nurturing these values can empower our children to thrive in a complex and ever-changing world.
This book offers a roadmap for raising children who are academically successful, emotionally intelligent, socially adept, and morally grounded. It encourages readers to prioritize human connection, empathy, and compassion over material possessions and fleeting digital distractions. By embracing the power of values, we can create a brighter future for ourselves and generations to come.
