“Freedom is not a state; it is an act. It is not some enchanted garden on a distant plateau where we can finally sit down and rest.” John Lewis

Freedom. It's a word tossed around so often, yet its true meaning can feel elusive. Is it simply the absence of restraints, or something deeper? This week, we will dive into the multifaceted nature of freedom, exploring its historical roots, philosophical underpinnings, and its profound impact on who we are.
Imagine a world where the strongest ruled, where fear and obedience were the norm. Chris and Ted Stewart, in their book Seven Tipping Points That Saved the World, paint a stark picture of most of human history: "For most of human history, the vast majority of people have been without any hope of freedom." People were pawns, not masters of their own destinies. The concept of freedom, as we understand it today, was a distant dream.
But the embers of freedom flickered on. Slowly, through revolutions and philosophical debates, the idea of individual liberty took root. The birth of the United States, as the Stewarts emphasize, stands as a testament to the power of this ideal. It wasn't easy, and it remains so. Freedom House, an organization dedicated to democracy and human rights, reports a "global political recession," with more countries experiencing a decline in freedom than a rise. The fight for freedom is a constant one.
But freedom isn't just about escaping physical constraints. As Becky Vollmer reminds us in You Are Not Stuck, "We all have choices; we just have to be brave enough to make them." Freedom is the power to choose our path, even when it's scary. It's the internal compass that guides us towards a life of meaning and purpose.
Sebastian Junger, in Freedom, makes a crucial distinction: "The freedom that comes from being feared...it's the absence of threat." True freedom isn't the freedom of a tyrant, ruling through fear. It's the freedom to live without constant apprehension, to speak your mind, and to chart your own course. John O'Leary, in In Awe, beautifully captures this essence: "Freedom necessitates owning the power and responsibility of choice." It's about taking the reins of our lives and embracing the responsibility that comes with it.
But what truly sets human freedom apart? Unlike a machine programmed to follow a set of instructions, we have the ability to question, to adapt, and to forge our own paths. This ability to choose, to be the architects of our own lives, is what makes us uniquely human.
“If liberty means anything at all it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell

The impact of freedom goes far beyond the individual. Societies that embrace freedom flourish. As the Stewarts highlight, the United States serves as a prime example of how freedom fosters "self-government" and fuels progress. Innovation thrives, creativity blossoms, and human rights are championed. Without freedom, these cornerstones of a prosperous society crumble.
Today was just the beginning of our exploration of freedom. In the following days, we'll delve deeper into the wellspring of freedom within each of us, examining how we can cultivate and nurture it. We'll explore the impact of freedom on individuals, relationships, and the world at large. The fight for freedom is an ongoing struggle, but by understanding its profound value, we can become better equipped to defend and expand it, not just for ourselves, but for generations to come.
“The only real prison is fear, and the only real freedom is freedom from fear.” Aung San Suu Kyi

In today's increasingly digital world, it's easy to lose sight of what makes us human. The constant bombardment of screens and social media can distract us from cultivating essential qualities like kindness, empathy, and resilience.
My book, Nurturing Hopeful Resilience, guides parents and caregivers through the challenges of raising children in a technology-driven age. It explores the importance of instilling strong values in children from a young age to help them develop into compassionate, responsible, and fulfilled individuals.
Through a series of practical exercises and insightful reflections, this book delves into fourteen core values: curiosity, awareness, kindness, learning, self-awareness, fairness, playfulness, compassion, service, belonging, trustworthiness, authenticity, community, and responsibility. Understanding and nurturing these values can empower our children to thrive in a complex and ever-changing world.
This book offers a roadmap for raising children who are academically successful, emotionally intelligent, socially adept, and morally grounded. It encourages readers to prioritize human connection, empathy, and compassion over material possessions and fleeting digital distractions. By embracing the power of values, we can create a brighter future for ourselves and generations to come.
