Flexibility should not be just a buzzword that companies throw around to sound modern or progressive. It should be a fundamental shift in how we think about work, relationships, and community. In the workplace, flexibility is about creating an environment where everyone can thrive, regardless of their personal circumstances or the stage of life they're in.
Annie Auerbach, in her insightful book Flex, captures the essence of flexibility beautifully: "Flex is so much more than a reflex to a crisis. It is bigger than the survival instinct of businesses facing uncertainty. Flex is about a better future with solidarity and diversity at its heart." She argues that we should use the upheaval of the COVID-19 pandemic and its resulting worldwide shutdown to become more flexible in how we think about work.
For example, for many years the rigid structure of the traditional 9-to-5 work schedule was considered the norm, with little room for deviation. But as Auerbach points out, "Flex is not just an interim solution to a workforce on lockdown. It leans into longer, more meandering career paths, beset with uncertainty, which require us to learn, relearn, adapt our skills, and pivot." This shift towards a more flexible approach to work allows employees to balance their professional and personal lives more effectively, leading to greater job satisfaction and overall well-being.
“The difficulty lies not so much in developing new ideas, as in escaping from old ones.” John Maynard Keynes

Flexibility extends beyond individual work arrangements to encompass broader workplace culture. Auerbach highlights this by stating, "Flex welcomes those who might be excluded from a macho working culture of long hours and presenteeism. It values their contributions precisely because they are not the status quo, and therefore their perspectives are bound to be fresh, innovative, and creative." By embracing diversity and challenging traditional norms, organizations can foster a more inclusive and dynamic work environment.
One of the most tangible benefits of flexibility in the workplace is the freedom it provides to adapt to changing circumstances. As Auerbach notes, "Flex allows us to shed the stuff that doesn’t work for us and the rhythms that don’t suit us." This newfound autonomy enables employees to optimize their daily routines, whether it's avoiding the daily commute or aligning their work schedule with their natural circadian rhythms.
Flexibility offers a solution to some of the most pressing challenges facing modern workplaces, such as burnout and stress. Auerbach aptly describes this as "a moment of reinvention, a chance to move away from the old mindset laden with rigidity, presenteeism, burnout, and stress." By prioritizing employee well-being and work-life balance, organizations can create a healthier, more sustainable work environment.
Flexibility is not merely a trend but a necessary evolution in how we approach work and community. It empowers individuals to thrive in their professional and personal lives, fosters inclusivity and innovation, and paves the way for a more sustainable future. As we continue to navigate the complexities of the modern workplace, embracing flexibility will be key to unlocking the full potential of our communities and organizations.

In today's increasingly digital world, it's easy to lose sight of what makes us human. The constant bombardment of screens and social media can distract us from cultivating essential qualities like kindness, empathy, and resilience.
My book, Nurturing Hopeful Resilience, guides parents and caregivers through the challenges of raising children in a technology-driven age. It explores the importance of instilling strong values in children from a young age to help them develop into compassionate, responsible, and fulfilled individuals.
Through a series of practical exercises and insightful reflections, this book delves into fourteen core values: curiosity, awareness, kindness, learning, self-awareness, fairness, playfulness, compassion, service, belonging, trustworthiness, authenticity, community, and responsibility. Understanding and nurturing these values can empower our children to thrive in a complex and ever-changing world.
This book offers a roadmap for raising children who are academically successful, emotionally intelligent, socially adept, and morally grounded.
