What Is Curiosity?

Hello everyone! I’m really excited to dive into today’s topic: curiosity. It’s something that shapes our lives in profound ways and plays a vital role in how we experience the world.

Curiosity is like a natural instinct—think of it as essential as breathing. It’s not something we need to learn in a traditional way, but rather something we can nurture and encourage within ourselves. Unfortunately, as we go through life, various influences can dampen that natural curiosity. It’s important that we protect this innate sense of wonder, especially in a world that sometimes discourages it.

Let me share a little story from my own life. When I was a child, I was incredibly curious. I remember sitting at the table with my family one day, munching on hamburgers, and asking my mother what they were made of. Her answer opened my eyes to a whole new perspective—I became a vegetarian for the next 13 years!

That moment was a reminder of how important it is to question the things we take for granted. If we don’t ask about the “why” or “how” of our everyday lives, we might end up doing things that don’t align with our values, simply because we didn’t know any better. Seth Goldenberg, in his book Radical Curiosity, emphasizes how the decline of curiosity can stifle our imagination and limit our potential. I remember feeling a sense of stagnation after finishing college, as if I’d lost that playful curiosity. It’s easy to forget that curiosity isn’t just a childhood trait; it’s a lifelong pursuit. So, what does it mean to embrace curiosity? It’s about remaining engaged and open to learning throughout our lives. I rediscovered my curiosity when I started teaching young children. Their endless questions remind us that curiosity is a gateway to deeper understanding and connection. It’s through this inquisitive spirit that we not only learn but also cultivate empathy and understanding.

Goldenberg suggests that radical curiosity is fueled by awe, not fear. It encourages us to ask better questions and challenge our assumptions. Think about it: when we approach life with curiosity, we become both teachers and learners. Every moment is an opportunity for discovery, whether it’s in nature, through reading, or in our interactions with others.

Curiosity can turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. It helps us see opportunities where we might have otherwise overlooked them. I love the phrase, “get good at being lucky,” which speaks to how curiosity can lead to unexpected and serendipitous encounters. Have you ever had a moment where a child asked you a question you didn’t know the answer to? That’s the spark of curiosity in action!

Today, let’s explore how we can embrace curiosity in our lives. How can we reignite that playful spirit and keep the flame of wonder alive? Together, we can discover the joy of being curious and see how it enriches our lives. So, let’s get started! What are some of your experiences with curiosity? How has it impacted your life?
